Level 2: Money and groups

Ratio, rates and money · level 2 of 8 · rough age 7-8 (a guide for parents; anyone can start anywhere)

In level 1 you shared fairly, counted by groups and met the coins. In this level you handle real money: counting a pile of coins fast, giving and checking change, telling needs from wants and saving week by week. You also learn to compare by "times as many" instead of "how many more", and you build ratio tables, the tool that turns any recipe or price into as many batches as you like.

Lesson You will be able to
Counting coins Count any pile of Canadian coins by counting on from the biggest, write dollars and cents, and make 1 dollar in many ways
Making change Find change by counting up from the price, explain why it works, check it, and round a cash total to 5 cents
Needs and wants Sort spending into needs and wants, and work out how many weeks it takes to save for something
Twice as many, half as much Compare by "times as many" with bar models, go backwards to the smaller amount, and explain why it differs from "how many more"
Ratio tables Build and extend a ratio table with shortcuts, and use it to scale a recipe or a price either way
Earning, spending, saving Keep a money diary, check it, and plan how long it takes to reach a savings goal
