Level 3: Angles and lines¶
Geometry · level 3 of 8 · rough age 9-10 (a guide for parents; anyone can start anywhere)
An angle is an amount of turning, and once you can measure turning in degrees, a whole world of shapes opens up. This level starts with turns you already know (quarter, half and full turns), gives them numbers with a protractor, and then uses them to sort lines, triangles and four-sided shapes into families. It ends with coordinates: two numbers that pin down any point on a grid.
| Lesson | You will be able to |
|---|---|
| What an angle is | See an angle as a turn, and name right, acute, obtuse, straight and reflex angles |
| Measuring angles with a protractor | Measure and draw angles in degrees, read the right scale, and explain why a full turn is 360° |
| Parallel and perpendicular lines | Recognise, test and draw parallel and perpendicular lines, and use the ∥ and ⊥ signs |
| Triangles by sides and by angles | Name any triangle by its sides and its angles, and explain why no triangle has two right angles |
| The quadrilateral family tree | Sort squares, rectangles, rhombuses, parallelograms, trapezoids and kites, and say which is a special case of which |
| Coordinates: finding points on a grid | Read and plot points (along, up), measure along grid lines, and find a missing corner of a shape |
