Statistics and data¶
Statistics is the math of finding out what is true from a pile of facts. You collect data, sort it, draw it, and boil it down to a few honest numbers: what is typical, how spread out things are, and how sure you can be.
| Step | Page | You will be able to |
|---|---|---|
| Play | Counting, sorting and charts | Run a survey, keep a tally and draw a bar chart that answers a question |
| Explore | Averages: mean, median and mode | Find the typical value three ways, and the range, and choose the fair one |
| Build | Spread: how far from the middle | Use quartiles, box plots, outliers and the standard deviation |
| Master | Distributions and the normal curve | Read the shape of data, use the 68–95–99.7 rule and compare with z-scores |
| Beyond | Reading data honestly | Spot bias and misleading graphs, measure correlation, fit a line and meet Simpson's paradox |
