Level 1: First shapes¶
Geometry · level 1 of 8 · rough age 5-6 (a guide for parents; anyone can start anywhere)
Geometry starts with looking closely. In this level you learn to name shapes by counting their sides and corners, to tell flat shapes from solid ones, to say exactly where things are, to sort shapes by a rule, and to build pictures from the seven pieces of a tangram. Every lesson has pictures, things to try with your hands, and answers to check.
| Lesson | You will be able to |
|---|---|
| Circles, triangles, squares and rectangles | Name a shape by counting its sides and corners, and explain why a turned square is still a square |
| Flat and solid | Tell flat shapes from solids, name cubes, boxes, balls, cylinders, cones and pyramids, and say which roll and which stack |
| Where is it? | Use above, below, beside, between, left and right, and give a robot exact directions on a grid |
| Sorting and matching shapes | Sort shapes by a rule, spot the odd one out, and tell "same shape, different size" from a different shape |
| Tangrams | Build pictures from the seven tangram pieces and explain why every picture covers the same space |
