Level 2: Tens, hundreds and sharing¶
Numbers · level 2 of 8 · rough age 7-8 (a guide for parents; anyone can start anywhere)
In level 1 you learned that ten ones make a ten. In this level the groups get bigger: ten tens make a hundred, and place value lets you read, write, add and subtract numbers up to a thousand, with regrouping that you can explain, not just follow. Then come two new operations, multiplying as equal groups and dividing as fair sharing, and the first fractions: halves, thirds and quarters. The level ends with a tour of older ways to write numbers, and why ours won.
| Lesson | You will be able to |
|---|---|
| Place value to 1000 | Read, write and compare any number to 1000, say what each digit is worth, and explain why zero holds a place |
| Adding and subtracting two- and three-digit numbers | Add and subtract by splitting, by jumping, and in columns with regrouping, and check subtraction with addition |
| Fact families and mental tricks | Turn one fact into four, use doubles, near doubles and "add 10, take 1", and estimate to check |
| Multiplying as equal groups | Find products by skip counting and arrays, and explain why 3 × 4 = 4 × 3 |
| Dividing as fair sharing and as making groups | Divide by sharing and by grouping, find leftovers, and use multiplying to divide |
| Halves, thirds and quarters | Cut shapes and groups into equal parts, name and compare unit fractions, and place them on a number line |
| Old ways to write numbers | Read and write tally marks, Egyptian, Roman and Maya numerals, and explain why place value and zero matter |
