Level 3: Big numbers, times tables and fractions¶
Numbers · level 3 of 8 · rough age 9-10 (a guide for parents; anyone can start anywhere)
In level 2 you worked with numbers up to 1000 and met multiplying and sharing. In this level the numbers grow to millions and billions, the times tables stop being a list to memorise and become a web of facts that hold each other up, and you learn to multiply and divide numbers of any size, knowing why each step works. Then the numbers go the other way, into the gaps between whole numbers: fractions and decimals.
| Lesson | You will be able to |
|---|---|
| Numbers to a million and beyond | Read, write, compare and round numbers in the millions and billions, and feel how big a million really is |
| Times tables with understanding | Build any times-table fact from easier ones, spot the patterns in the tables, and multiply by 10, 100 and 1000 |
| Multiplying bigger numbers | Multiply two- and three-digit numbers with the area model and the standard method, and estimate first |
| Division with remainders | Divide by sharing hundreds, tens and ones, do long division, and decide what a remainder means in a story |
| Fractions are numbers | Place fractions on the number line, and switch between improper fractions and mixed numbers |
| Equal and comparing fractions | Make equivalent fractions, explain why they are equal, and compare any two fractions |
| Decimals: tenths and hundredths | Read, write and compare decimals, and see them as fractions out of 10 and 100 |
