Level 1: Sharing and "for every"¶
Ratio, rates and money · level 1 of 8 · rough age 5-6 (a guide for parents; anyone can start anywhere)
Ratio starts with two everyday ideas: sharing fairly, and things that come in groups ("2 wheels for every bike"). In this level you deal out snacks so every plate is the same, count by groups, make a recipe twice so it still tastes right, and meet the coins of Canada and use them in a play shop. Every lesson has pictures, things to try with real objects, and answers to check.
| Lesson | You will be able to |
|---|---|
| Fair shares | Share things fairly by dealing one at a time, explain why dealing is always fair, and check a share by counting |
| "For every" | Count things that come in groups by twos, threes, fours and fives, and work backwards from the total to the number of groups |
| Doubling a recipe | Double or triple every ingredient of a recipe, and explain why forgetting one changes the taste |
| Canadian coins | Name the nickel, dime, quarter, loonie and toonie and their worth, and explain why a smaller coin can be worth more |
| Shopping play | Pay for toys with loonies and toonies, tell which costs more, and decide what you can afford |
