Level 1: Growing and moving¶
Change and motion · level 1 of 8 · rough age 5-6 (a guide for parents; anyone can start anywhere)
Everything around us changes: babies grow, ice melts, balloons go flat, the sky goes dark at night. In this level you learn to notice change and to talk about it with care: what changed, what stayed the same, which came first, and whether the change was fast or slow. These are the very first ideas of a big part of mathematics, which grown-ups later call calculus. Every lesson has pictures, little experiments to try at home, and questions with answers.
| Lesson | You will be able to |
|---|---|
| Bigger and smaller over time | Put pictures of something growing or shrinking in order from first to last, and explain how you knew |
| Fast and slow | Say who is faster in a race by looking at how far each one went in the same time |
| Before, now and after | Tell what changed and what stayed the same, like when ice melts or a balloon loses air |
| Filling and emptying | Tell if something fills or empties the same all the way, or fast at first and then slower |
| Changes that come back | Spot changes that repeat, like day and night, the seasons and the shape of the Moon |
| Steep and gentle | Compare a steep ramp and a gentle ramp, and say which one makes a ball go faster |
