Level 2: Measuring change¶
Change and motion · level 2 of 8 · rough age 7-8 (a guide for parents; anyone can start anywhere)
In level 1 you learned to notice change: bigger or smaller, fast or slow, steep or gentle. In this level you put numbers on change. You find out exactly how much something grew or cooled, compare speeds fairly even when the races were different, read change from tables and charts, and tell steady change from change that speeds up or slows down. The level ends with your own growth journal: a bean plant, a ruler and two weeks of careful measuring.
| Lesson | You will be able to |
|---|---|
| How much did it change? | Find how much something went up or down by counting on, including temperatures below zero |
| Comparing speeds fairly | Compare two movers when they went the same distance, the same time, or neither |
| Change charts | Read a table and a bar or line chart of temperatures, and find when it rose or fell fastest |
| Steady and not steady | Tell steady change (the same each time) from change that grows faster and faster, in tables and pictures |
| Speeding up and slowing down | Use positions marked every second to tell if something is speeding up, slowing down or stopped |
| A growth journal | Measure and record a growing plant, and tell the story of its growth from your numbers |
